What does 'true bypass' actually mean on a pedal?

A student of mine came in last week holding his phone up to show me a forum thread. Someone had told him his new overdrive was "killing his tone" because it wasn't true bypass. The pedal cost him sixty bucks and it sounds great. I told him to put the phone away.

When a pedal is switched off, your guitar signal still has to travel through it on its way to the amp. The question is: what happens to that signal inside the pedal's circuitry while it's sitting there doing nothing?
A true bypass pedal uses a mechanical switch that physically connects your input jack directly to your output jack — bypassing every component in the circuit entirely. The signal goes in, hops over everything, and comes straight out. The pedal is, electrically speaking, not there.
A buffered bypass pedal routes your signal through a buffer circuit even when it's off. A buffer is a simple amplifier that doesn't change your volume or add gain — its job is to strengthen the signal and lower its impedance before passing it on.

Why the argument started in the first place
Back when pedalboards got bigger and patch cables got longer, people noticed their tone was getting duller — less high-end sparkle, less presence. The culprit was capacitance: long cable runs bleed off treble frequencies, and a chain of cheaply buffered pedals made it worse. Someone with twelve pedals and fifteen feet of cable between them had a real problem.

Players who are particular about their fuzz tone will often want true bypass on everything in front of it.
If you're running a short board — guitar straight into two or three pedals, then into the amp — true bypass versus buffered bypass makes almost no audible difference in a live mix. I'd challenge most players to reliably tell them apart in a blind test.
Where it starts to matter more: long cable runs, big boards with lots of pedals, or players using passive vintage-style pickups that are particularly sensitive to impedance loading. If that's not you yet, don't stress it.
What to look for on a beginner board
Honestly, for your first few pedals, bypass type is about the last thing I'd worry about. Focus on whether the pedal sounds good, whether it's built solidly, and whether the controls make sense to you.
