Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9

Rating: 4.5 / 5

The most copied overdrive on earth, and still the reference. Mid-focused, smooth, and magic in front of a pushed amp — the default "more" pedal for blues and rock.

  • Mid hump is not for everyone
  • True-bypass fans dislike the buffer

Why it is a classic

The TS9 does one thing perfectly: it tightens and pushes an already-driven amp, adding sustain and a vocal midrange bump that helps leads cut through. As a standalone distortion it is mild, but as a boost or a tone-shaper it is unbeatable, which is why it has been on pro boards since the 1980s.

It is also the go-to "tube-screamer in front of high gain" trick for metal — it does not add much gain, but it cleans up a flubby high-gain amp and tightens the low end beautifully.
