Epiphone Les Paul Standard ’50s

Rating: 4.5 / 5

Real Les Paul thump and sustain at a beginner-friendly price. The obvious pick if you want a rock and blues machine rather than a Strat.

Pros

  • Coil-splitting adds versatility
  • Premium look and feel

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Less suited to sparkly clean styles
  • Setup can need attention out of the box

Big, warm and built for rock

The modern Epiphone Les Paul Standard is a serious instrument: a mahogany body with a maple cap, ProBucker humbuckers with coil-splitting, and that unmistakable thick, sustaining tone. It is heavier than a Strat and the shorter scale feels different under the fingers, but for rock, blues and heavier styles it is hard to beat at the price.
